Jackrabbits close in on .500, upend SpringfieldJune 7, 2016
SPRINGFIELD, ILL. – The University of Missouri’s Alex Del Rio and Indiana University – Southeast’s Clay Benefield topped a 10-hit Kokomo Jackrabbits offensive attack Tuesday, June 7.
Del Rio, who has been turning heads in the Prospect League with his early batting prowess, showed no signs of slowing down at Robin Roberts Park. He doubled and homered as part of a three-hit, two-runs scored, two-RBI night. Benefield, who entered the evening among the PL’s top 20 in batting average, kept that theme going with a two-bagger included in his two-for-five, two-RBI effort. Due to such efforts, the Jackrabbits improved to 5-6 on the season with a 5-1 win over the Sliders.
University of North Florida’s Zach Drury, in his first Gold and Brown pitching start, struck out five home team hitters over four innings. Butler University’s Sam Hubbe, coming in with the game tied at 1-1 after four frames, earned his first victory going four scoreless frames with four strikeouts. Kokomo’s bullpen success continued to grow with his numbers and that of staff mate Ryan Lee, as the University of Missouri hurler worked out of a bases-loaded Springfield rally attempt in the ninth without any runs scoring.
Sporting a modest two-game win string, the Jackrabbits close out a brief two-game trip, going to Quincy, Ill., for a 7:35 p.m. EST first pitch at Quincy University Stadium Wednesday, June 8.
