Jackrabbits topped in brief road swing openerJune 1, 2016
SPRINGFIELD, ILL. – A designated hitter – outfield combination of center fielder Lance Mays of East Tennessee State University and DH Clay Benefield of Indiana University – Southeast guided a six-run, eight-hit attack for the Kokomo Jackrabbits Wednesday, June 1.
Mays, turning heads around the Prospect League with his offensive production early in 2016, went three-for-five with three runs scored. Benefield, who continues to be the Gold and Brown’s top bat amongst the early-season starters with a .409 mark, added a pair of hits and two RBI. Despite those efforts, the host Sliders jumped out to a 5-1 lead after four frames at Robin Roberts Stadium and managed to hold off a three-run eighth inning comeback by the visitors to take a 7-6 win.
The Jackrabbits’ bullpen remained impressive. After starting pitcher Parker Sanburn of Indiana University was nicked for five runs and five hits in three innings, the trio of Nick Floyd of Ball State, Mike Anthony of Lock Haven University and Ryne Underwood of Indiana University-Southeast limited the hosts to two runs and struck out three, with Floyd accounting for all of them, over the final five frames.
Kokomo and Springfield wrap up the two-game set Thursday, June 2, with a 7:35 p.m. first pitch. Following the contest, the Jackrabbits return to Kokomo Municipal Stadium to begin a three-game weekend slate Friday, June 3.
