Jackrabbits open regular season final week on short end

August 3, 2016

LAFAYETTE, IND. – The host Lafayette Aviators pieced together a nine-run outburst over the fifth and sixth innings at Loeb Stadium Tuesday, August 2, sending the Kokomo Jackrabbits into a tie for second on the second half Prospect League Eastern Division standings.

Kean University’s Chris Amato and Lafayette starter Jake Preston made things tough on each offense early, combining to halt both sides to one run on 10 hits over four and a half frames. However, the home side got its crowd to their feet in the fifth and sixth with three runs on four hits in the fifth and six runs on six hits in the sixth. From there, relief pitchers Kellan Elsbury and Jon Keller blanked the Gold and Brown on three hits while striking out two to preserve the victory.

Kokomo, dipping to 14-12 in the league’s second half and into a tie with first half champion West Virginia a half-game behind Champion City, did get a pair of multiple-hit efforts from third baseman Ryan Hutchinson of Illinois State and Cole Nieto of Baldwin-Wallace. They each delivered two safeties with Hutchinson adding his 12th double.

The Jackrabbits return to Kokomo Municipal Stadium Wednesday and Thursday, Aug. 3 and 4, for a pivotal two-game set with the Miners. Game times are 6:35 p.m. each evening with Pirates of Kokomo being the promotion. Wednesday’s clash features an eye patch giveaway to the first 300 children as part of kids 12 and under eating free and being able to go on the turf at evening’s end for squirt gun battles and to run the bases. Thursday is highlighted by a jersey auction and mustache/beard appreciation night with all men showing off their facial works of art receiving a $5 backyard ticket and $1 hot dog meal deal.
