Jackrabbits close home stand out with win

June 5, 2016

KOKOMO, IND. – More strong bullpen work, some key hits and flash defense all added up to a Kokomo Jackrabbits victory Sunday, June 5.

The trio of Indiana University – Southeast’s Ryne Underwood, Butler University’s Quentin Miller and Indiana University – South Bend’s Trey Bickel held the visiting Lafayette Aviators to just one earned run on three hits over the final four frames to lock up a 6-3 win in front of better than 1100 fans at Kokomo Municipal Stadium.

“We feel like our bullpen is really coming along, as we have a unique five-man rotation,” field manager Matt Howard said. “We’re becoming more and more confident in them. It’ll help us out down the stretch, as we can go to one guy for an inning and then another and so forth.”

They were aided by another good start from Oberlin College’s Shawn Kiley (five innings pitched, three strikeouts, two earned runs surrendered) in route to his second Prospects League victory and the Coca-Cola Player of the game, East Tennessee State’s Lance Mays, who finished with two hits and an RBI and a tremendous diving catch in right center field in the top of the eighth inning to shut off an Aviator rally. Mays and Ball State University’s Caleb Stayton each doubled for the home side’s offense.

“Shawn is one of those guys that might not have overpowering stuff, but he just knows how to pitch,” Howard said. “He fills the zone and pitches to contact. If you can do that in this league, more often than not, you will be successful.”
