Prospect League first half ends with thriller

KOKOMO, IND. – Field manager Matt Howard was all positives after a nip-and-tuck Prospect League Eastern Division first half title chase saw his Kokomo Jackrabbits end at 15-15, two and a half games behind West Virginia Wednesday, June 29.

“Second half … here we come,” he said as he hustled up to the radio booth for a post-game interview.

“Hey, if we take care of the ball a little better early on, maybe we are the ones on top of the Eastern Division tonight,” he added later. “These guys are really looking forward to getting into the next portion of the season. They know what’s possible if they play like they can.”

The PL’s first half ended with a thriller in front of nearly 1,400 at Kokomo Municipal Stadium. Visiting Lafayette, who went into the night needed a Miners’ loss at Butler and a win over their league rivals to capture the top spot, and the Gold and Brown went back and forth over the first seven innings to the tune of a 3-3 tie. The Aviators broke away in the final two at-bats behind a run scored on a wild pitch inh the eighth and a home run in the 9th for a 5-3 win.

Coca-Cola Player of the Game and Kokomo native Logan Barnes of Indiana University – Southeast tallied three hits to lead the home team offense. Third baseman Ryan Hutchinson of Illinois State University added a pair of hits.

Kokomo’s second half schedule begins Thursday, June 30, as they travel to play the Aviators at Loeb Stadium in Lafayette, Ind. First pitch is 6:35 p.m.
