Jackrabbits have slammin’ good time, topple Springfield

July 25, 2017

KOKOMO, IND. – A surname explained a pivotal at-bat for the Kokomo Jackrabbits Tuesday, July 25.

The University of Missouri’s Alex Del Rio, who last name translates into “of the river”, had the power of a raging waterfall when he caught the perfect pitch from Springfield Sliders’ starting pitcher Tsubaba Maruyama in the bottom of the second inning. The Coca-Cola Player of the Game drilled the ball high and deep over the right field fence for the franchise’s first grand big fly much to the appreciation of more than 1,800 thrilled fans at Kokomo Municipal Stadium.

The bases clearing bomb highlighted a huge second frame for the Brown and Gold that saw them plate seven runs. Adding to the offensive surplus was Austin Peay University’s Imani Willis. Entering the evening as the Prospect League’s top hitter, he kept firm grasp on his advantage after going three-for-three with an RBI which included a rare bunt triple that Springfield’s first baseman lost in the sun on the toss from the pitcher.

Kokomo’s eight-run, eight-hit offensive attack helped lift the University of Indianapolis’ Mike Schalasky to his second collegiate wood bat league victory. His six-inning line included six strikeouts. The University of Missouri’s Josh Konecek was lockdown tough out of the bullpen, helping the home side wriggle out of a bases-loaded, nobody out situation in the seventh inning which had already led to two visiting runs. He proceeded to not allow a hit and strike out five for his second save.

First-year field manager Gary McClure’s squad takes to the road for a quick visit to Champion City Wednesday, July 26. Game time is 6:35 p.m. The Jackrabbits return to KMS for the start of three straight at home as Chillicothe comes to town Thursday, July 26, for a 6:35 first pitch.
