Comeback pushes Jackrabbits to home winJuly 22, 2017
KOKOMO, IND. – Needing to string together a win skein to keep itself in the playoff discussion for the 2017 Prospect League postgame, first-year field manager Gary McClure’s crew picked up a second straight “W” in thrilling fashion Saturday, July 22.
Playing in front of 2,725 excited home fans, good for the sixth-largest crowd in franchise history, the Brown and Gold gained their 21st victory and inched only three games shy of .500 with a three-run ninth inning rally for the ages. A walk to second baseman Chris Reid followed by designated hitter Andrew Dyke being hit by a pitch from the Quincy Gems’ Shane Green got the roll started. The visiting closer got a popped up bunt for an out but Coca-Cola Player of the Game and right fielder Zeb Adreon hit a shot to right field that skipped over the fence for a ground rule double, plating Reid for a 5-4 score. Quincy elected to walk red-hot hitting shortstop Imani Willis which loaded the bases and was followed by a walk to catcher Collin Butkiewicz to tie the game at 5-5. A three-pitch strikeout moved the game to the brink of extra innings, but Green uncorked a wild pitch that eluded his catcher and allowed a quick-thinking Adreon to scoot home for the victory.
The club’s eighth walk-off win and second this season was topped by Adreon’s two hits and ninth inning heroics. Starting DH Alex Del Rio added a two-hit, RBI effort at the plate, too. The rally led relief pitcher Mike Schalasky to his first PL victory, as he struck out three Gems over two innings.
Kokomo takes to the road Sunday, July 23, for a doubleheader against league rival Lafayette. Game times are 3 and 5:05 p.m. at Loeb Stadium. The Brown and Gold return home to take on Springfield Tuesday, July 25. First pitch is 6:35 p.m.
