Rally falls short, short home set concludes

July 19, 2017

KOKOMO, IND. – First baseman Romero Harris doubled as part of a two-hit, two-run scored contest, and left fielder Storm Joop drove in two runs, highlighting the offensive attack for the Kokomo Jackrabbits Wednesday, July 19.

The duo’s efforts nearly brought first-year field manager Gary McClure’s squad back from a 7-3 deficit after three and a half innings. Chipping away at the delight of better than 1,300 fans at Kokomo Municipal Stadium, Joop singled in a tally in the bottom of the sixth, third baseman Chris Reid brought in a run on a ground out in the seventh, and Joop picked up his second RBI with a ground out in the eighth to close within 7-6. Unfortunately, Kokomo’s final at-bat saw Quincy Gems’ relief pitcher Taylro Goshen lock down the save with a three-up, three-down frame.

Despite the tough-luck loss which closed out a pair of back-to-back home defeats, McClure and his staff saw a silver lining in the form of reliever Matt Patton. The Taylor University player was dealing from the get go when he entered in the sixth, retiring all 11 Gems in order which included five by strikeout. His totals earned him Coca-Cola Player of Week honors.

Kokomo, sitting at 19-23, takes to the road for a pair of 7:05 p.m. starts at Chillicothe Thursday and Friday, July 20 and 21. The Jackrabbits return home for a Star Wars celebration as part of a meeting with Quincy Saturday, July 22. Game time is 7:05 p.m.
