Aviators sew up State Highway 26 Series; Jackrabbits falter in final home series openerAugust 2, 2017
KOKOMO, IND. – Des Moines Area Community College’s Luke Fegen led the Kokomo Jackrabbits’ offense in the opener of the final home series of the 2017 Prospect League season Wednesday, July 2.
In route to Coca-Cola Player of the Game honors, he collected his 13th multiple-hit effort and hit safely for the fifth time in the last six contests. Fegen finished with three hits and scored a run. Infielder Chris Reid of Louisiana State University contributed a safety, two RBI and a run scored to first-year field manager Gary McClure’s squad.
A crowd of better than 1900 saw the home side rally from an early 3-0 deficit with three runs in the home half of the third, sparked by Reid’s two-run single. Enter Lafayette Aviators’ relief pitcher Brad Depperman at that point. The University of North Florida product forced nine strikeouts while surrendering only one hit over four innings, while the Western Division leaders’ offense got into high gear tallying single runs in the fifth and sixth and three in the eighth to seal an 8-3 victory.
The win clinched the 2017 edition of the Battle for State Highway 26 series for the visitors. With a 10-9 lead going into a final meeting with the Brown and Gold Thursday, August 3, Lafayette would still claim the coveted trophy with a Jaxckrabbits’ win due to run differential. First pitch in Kokomo’s home finale is 6:35 p.m.
