LAFAYETTE, IND. – Three Kokomo Jackrabbits’ pitchers combined for 11 strikeouts, but it wasn’t enough, as the host and Prospect League rival Lafayette Aviators managed to even the Battle for State Road 26 at one apiece with a 4-1 decision Friday, June 2.
Starting pitcher Tucker Waddups of Anderson University K’ed four home side hitters, while relief pitcher Josh Konecek of the University of Missouri struck out five over his two innings of work to highlight the staff efforts. Lock Haven University’s Breton LaRose, in his second appearance for the Brown and Gold, got two punch outs over two frames.
On the offensive side, outfielder Luke Bowerbank of Rutgers University drove in a third inning tally to tie the score at 1-1, plating Highland Community College’s Mitchell Austin on a ground out. The Aviators countered with a pair of scores in the home half of the third and didn’t look back. Austin, Des Moines Community College’s Luke Fegen and John A. Logan College’s Colin Butkiewicz each registered a hit to account for the Jackrabbits’ final total.
Manager Gary McClure’s squad, standing 2-2, returns to Municipal Stadium to begin four in a row on the home turf, as Chillicothe visits Saturday and Sunday, June 3 and 4, and Lafayette traverses State Road 26 for contests Tuesday and Wednesday, June 6 and 7.
