Late rally falls short for KokomoJune 28, 2017
KOKOMO, IND. – First baseman Storm Joop and designated hitter Andrew Dyke each singled home scores in seventh and eighth inning comeback attempts for the home-standing Kokomo Jackrabbits Wednesday, June 28. However, a visiting Champion City Kings squad in the midst of a down to the wire battle with Chillicothe for the first half Prospect League title averted any further advances by their hosts to take a 6-3 victory.
A strong Kokomo Municipal Stadium crowd of over 1,500 saw local starting pitcher Dalton Leighty, a Western HS alum, dance around trouble throughout five innings in which he struck out five but walked eight. Relief pitcher Josh Konecek enabled first-year field manager Gary McClure’s crew to hold serve and mount its rally with three scoreless innings in which he gave up only two hits and struck out four in route to Coca-Cola Player of the Game honors.
Kokomo, dipping to 10-16, was guided by first baseman Alex Del Rio with two hits and a run scored on the offensive side. The Brown and Gold take to the road for three straight where they will battle Butler at Kelly Automotive Park Thursday and Friday, June 29 and 30, and return to Carleton Davidson Stadium for a contest against the Kings Saturday, July 1.
