Kokomo Municipal Stadium Receives Ballpark Digest’s Favorite Summer-Collegiate Ballpark For Second Year In A Row
Jackrabbits receive Best Ballpark Award as They Prepare for All-Star Week
July 7, 2016 - Kokomo Municipal Stadium is two years old, and is 2 for 2 in Ballpark Digest’s Best of the Ballparks 2016 fan competition, as the site’s readers chose the home of the Prospect League’s Kokomo Jackrabbits and new PDL soccer team Kokomo Mantis FC as the best summer-collegiate facility.
This is the second year for Ballpark Digest’s fan vote. Only one other ballpark, TD Bank Ballpark, repeated as a fan favorite in 2016, underscoring how difficult it is to win back-to-back championships.
“Kokomo Jackrabbits fans love their team and love their ballpark,” said Kevin Reichard, Ballpark Digest publisher. “It’s hard to repeat as a fan favorite, but the vote shows how much the community has embraced the Jackrabbits and love their ballpark.”
“This shows the dedication of our fans and the appreciation they have for a quality venue,” said Kokomo Mayor Greg Goodnight. “Municipal Stadium is quickly reaching iconic status in the community. It is the place to be for Jackrabbits baseball as well as Kokomo Mantis FC soccer.”
Almost 100,000 fans voted in the Best of the Ballparks 2016 competition. Ballpark Digest readers were asked to select their favorite ballpark in a bracketed tournament over five rounds. In the final round, fans were asked to choose between Kokomo Municipal Stadium and Athletic Park, home of the Northwoods League’s Wisconsin Woodchucks. In a close vote, Kokomo Municipal Stadium won by a narrow 2% margin.
“We are thrilled to receive this award two years in row. It shows how much the community supports the stadium and our teams. The timing of this award couldn’t be better for us. July 12th and 13th the Jackrabbits are hosting the 2016 Prospect League All-Star Game and Home Run Derby. This will allow all fans from surrounding cities to come and experience Ballpark Digest’s number one ballpark.” Said Jackrabbits Dan Kuenzi, Senior Vice President of Operations.
The Jackrabbits All-Star events commence on Tuesday, July 12th at 7pm with the Home Run Derby and live music from Mike Milligan and Steam Shovel at the stadium’s Umbrella Bar. Wednesday, July 13th the All-Star game begins at 7pm which will also have post-game fireworks and fans will be able to bid on the player worn All-Star jerseys. Fans will see the best of the best in the Prospect League all while enjoying great entertainment and delicious food in a fantastic environment at Kokomo Municipal Stadium. Tickets to the All-Star events can be purchased online at kokomojackrabbits.com or onsite at the box office.
The Prospect League was founded in 1963 – known as The Central Illinois Collegiate League until merging in 2009 – and is one of the longest continuously operating, independent, summer collegiate baseball leagues in the country. With the addition of Lafayette, IN the Prospect League will have 12 teams competing in a six-state region: Indiana, Illinois, Missouri, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia.
