KOKOMO, IND. – Visiting Hannibal pieced together three hits in route to a four-run 10th to drop the host Kokomo Jackrabbits to a 7-3 Prospect League loss Thursday, July 21.
The Gold and Brown, dipping to 8-7 in the PL’s second half and 23-22 overall, did bring the home crowd of better than 1400 to its feet during the evening, rallying from a 3-1 deficit after five and a half frames. Catcher Josh Zbierski of Southern New Hampshire University ripped a lead-off triple to open the sixth and was brought home on a double play, trimming the deficit to 3-2. As Butler University’s Sam Hubbe and Millersville University’s Matt Ulrich kept the Caveman off the plate by giving up only two hits over three and a third frames out of the bullpen, the home side tied the contest at 3-3 in the eighth, as outfielder Griffin Harms of Wayne State University singled home Zbierski, the Coca-Cola Player of the Game, who had doubled.
Zbierski’s two hits and two runs scored led the offense. Outfielder Alex Del Rio of the University of Missouri added a pair of hits as well to the seven-hit attack.
Kokomo, dropping a game and a half behind first-place West Virginia with the loss, begins an eight-game road trip Friday, July 22. The Jackrabbits and Caveman play a doubleheader at Clemens Field in Hannibal with 5:30 and 7:30 p.m. starts.
