Quincy's Mathis wins PL Home Run Derby

KOKOMO, IND. – Trey Mathis of the Quincy Gems (University of Alabama – Huntsville) claimed the 2016 Prospect League All-Star Week Home Run Derby. Mathis defeated West Virginia’s Dan Ward (Eastern New Mexico University) 11-5 in the final round.

In the championship round, Mathis hit six home runs, but earned a bonus minute for hitting at least one home run between left-center and right-center. In the bonus time, Mathis hit five more for a total of 11. Ward could only muster five home runs in the final round, making Mathis the winner.

Mathis finished with 39 total home runs on the night. The entire contest saw 158 baseballs leave the Kokomo Municipal Stadium playing field.

After hitting a combined 20 home runs through two rounds (13 in round one, seven in round two), Mathis went into the bracket round as the number three seed with Ward, Caleb Stayton (Kokomo Jackrabbits, #2 seed – Ball State University), and Trey Hannam (Springfield Sliders, #4 seed – University of Illinois-Springfield).

Mathis hit another eight homers to top Stayton, who clubbed two in the round. Ward and Hannam each hit seven in the bracket round, forcing a swing-off. After Hannam hit a home run that landed in 16 seconds, Ward advanced to the championship round with a long ball that landed in nine seconds.
